Photo: The belief that a person can exist independently from flesh and blood goes back to the dawn of humanity. Variously described as the spirit, soul or ego, the essence of man was referred to by the ancient Egyptians as the Ka and Ba, by the Greeks as psyche and nous, while the Muslims called it sirr, ruh and nafs, the Hindu's atman and jiiva, the Jews nershamah, ruah and nefash, and the medieval scholars pondered tje mysteries of anima divina and anima humana. From this evolved the concept of an astral body, a non-material replica of the physical body. Occultists believe that in a normal healthy waking state, the two bodies are in alignment, but the effects of mind-altering drugs, stress, illness and old age can cause the astral body to become out of 'coincidence'. There are countless examples of people who have felt themselves fleetingly leave their body. Some believe that this happens naturally during sleep, and that dreams of flying are vague memories of OOBE"S. During this out of body state, the astral body can travel about our world or enter another dimension known as the astral plane. People who believe they can induce OOBE'S call this 'astral travelling'. Strong belief and anecdotal reports, however are not enough to convice the analytical scientific community of the objective reality of these experiences. A Paranormal researcher by the name of Jenny Randles investigated the case of a five year old boy who witnessed surgeons carrying out an operation on his unconscious body, in a british hospital. The boy states he watched from near the ceiling as his heart was fitted with a plastic valve, the child had not seen this valve before surgery, as the Dr's believed he may find it disturbing. He described the valve and wondered why the surgeon had not answered his questions about it during his surgery. So is it possible, that a dream is not just a dream, and that some people may be lucky enough to leave their bodies and experience astral journeys.
